ICD-10 for Providers

Training for ICD-10 will begin February 1st. To help prepare for the changes that are coming, the ICD-10 team has outlined helpful information for each specialty. This page will serve as a one-stop-shop for providers to obtain pertinent information, as BMC and other hospitals throughout the country move forward with this federally-mandated transition to ICD-10 codes.

  • ICD-10 will impact the new Meaningful Use (MU) requirements for the Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) in relation to diagnoses granularity and specificity of the disease process

  • Physicians will face the need to document diagnostic information with acuity, type, orgin and manifestations to support severity an use of services to meet medical necessity requirements.

  • Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) tracking tools will use ICD-10 codes and descriptions, therefore training is critical

  • ICD-10 codes will provide better specificity to measure quality of care, evaluate new technologies and improve outcomes.

Documentation Concepts required in your documentation. Much of the information required for ICD-10 is very valuable in ICD-9 coding as well.

  • One key concept you will need to know is that ICD-10 defines upper and lower as divided at the diaphragm
