Elaine Ullian, CEO

Elaine Ullian is President and Chief Executive Officer of Boston Medical Center, a private, not-for-profit, 626-bed, academic medical center with a community-based focus. Established in July 1996, Boston Medical Center, the country’s first full asset merger of two public hospitals with a private academic medical center, is the merged entity of Boston City Hospital, Boston Specialty Rehabilitation Hospital and Boston University Medical Center Hospital. Boston Medical Center (comprised of the Medical Center and its HealthNet Health Plan) has more than 6,000 employees, 1,400 physicians and an annual operating budget of roughly $2.5 billion. Boston Medical Center is a major teaching affiliate of Boston University Schools of Medicine, Public Health and Dental Medicine.
In addition to the Medical Center and its affiliated health community health centers, BMC owns and operates the BMC HealthNet Plan, a statewide Medicaid Managed Care Organization that currently covers over 250,000 lives. The HealthNet Plan serves more than 216 Massachusetts cities and towns.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and the Board of Boston University Medical Center Hospital recruited Mrs. Ullian in 1994 to lead a process wherein the city hospitals and the private, non-profit BU Medical Center Hospital would be merged. Prior to her role as President of BU Medical Center Hospital, she served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Faulkner Hospital. Before assuming the presidency of Faulkner Hospital, she held leadership positions at New England Medical Center Hospital and with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
Mrs. Ullian is active in many professional and service organizations. She is a member of the Boston Public Health Commission and is the former Chair of the Conference of Boston Teaching Hospitals. Mrs. Ullian has served on Transition Teams for former Governors Paul Cellucci and William Weld and Mayor Thomas M. Menino.
Mrs. Ullian also serves as a director for the following public companies: Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Thermo Fisher Scientific, and Hologic.
Mrs. Ullian is the recipient of numerous honors and awards. In 2009 she received the Distinguished Executive Award from UMass Boston. She was honored by the Visiting Nurses Association of Boston in 2007 for her role as a community leader, and also by Roxbury Comprehensive Health Center for role as a public health leader. In May 2006, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Health Care for All. In May 2004, she was honored by the Mattapan Community Health Center for her leadership in public health. In January 2002 she was the recipient of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce Pinnacle Award for Lifetime Achievement. Also in 2002, Mrs. Ullian was the John D. Thompson Distinguished Visiting Professor at Yale University. She has received the YWCA Women’s Achievement Award and also the Boston University School of Medicine Award of Achievement in Administration. Her other awards include the Distinguished Service Award from Tufts University; the Mass Health Council Award for Outstanding Leadership in Public Health; the Abigail Adams Award presented by the Massachusetts Women’s Political Caucus; and, the Maimonides Award for outstanding leadership in healthcare, presented by the Anti-Defamation League.
Mrs. Ullian is an Associate Professor of Boston University School of Public Health and a member of the faculty at the Harvard University School of Public Health. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Tufts University and a Masters Degree from the University of Michigan.
On July 28, 2009, Mrs. Ullian announced that she will retire from her position at Boston Medical Center when her contract expires in January 2010.
