Boston Medical Center is a teaching institution. Physicians and nurses training in anesthesiology often participate in various aspects of our anesthesia care, supervised by an experienced staff anesthesiologist. Anesthetics can also be provided together with fully trained nurse anesthetists (CRNAs). Other individuals in training such as medical and paramedic students may be present during an anesthetic, unless otherwise requested by the patient.
BMC physicians providing anesthesia care are reimbursed for their care in a manner similar to other physicians. That is, anesthesiologists bill independently and payment to the hospital bill does not cover the anesthesia service's professional fees. There may be a bill from the hospital with an item referring to “anesthesia,” but this relates to materials and equipment used to provide anesthetic care and not the professional fee.
