BMC’s Endocrinology program is an integral part of the Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition and Weight Management located in newly renovated space on the second floor of the Preston Family Building. The state-of-the-art, 4,500 square-foot clinic provides an integrated service to address our patients’ needs.

Thyroid

The thyroid subsection is nationally recognized for both clinical and research achievements.  Five faculty members are interested in all aspects of thyroid diseases, especially patients with hyper- and hypothyroidism, thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy, autoimmune thyroid disease, goiter, and benign and malignant thyroid nodules.  Our faculty has in depth expertise in thyroid ultrasound and fine needle aspiration biopsies, and in the use of radioactive iodine in the therapy of hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer.  Patients are seen in a timely manner after consultation requests.

Our research activities are now primarily devoted to the effect of iodine and perchlorate on thyroid function in pregnancy and during breast feeding in the postnatal period, and to various aspects of the peripheral metabolism of the thyroid hormones, especially in the skin.

Bone

In our Bone Health Care Clinic, directed by Michael F.  Holick, PhD, MD, a leading expert in the field of bone metabolism and vitamin D, we emphasize the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis along with other metabolic bone disorders, including rickets, osteomalacia, hypoparathyroidism, hyperparathyroidism, oncogenic osteomalacia, and acquired and inherited disorders of calcium, vitamin D, phosphate and bone metabolism.

Our state-of-the-art bone densitometry equipment for dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA scan) uses very low dose x-ray and allows us to make an immediate assessment of a patient’s bone status.

Many patients are referred to us within BMC as well as from outside BMC for bone density evaluation only. These scans are interpreted by an endocrinologist.

Adrenal

Adrenal vein catheterizations can be done as part of the work up for the evaluation of primary aldosteronism. These are done under the direction of an endocrinologist and are performed at Boston Medical Center’s Interventional Radiology department by skilled radiologists.
