Cancer Care in Older Adults


Rebecca A. Silliman, MD, PhD is Professor of Medicine and Public Health, Boston University Schools of Medicine and Public Health, and Chief of the Geriatrics Section at Boston Medical Center. The central focus of Dr. Silliman's past and current research has been on chronic disease management in old age. Dr. Silliman has studied breast cancer care and its outcomes in older women for over 20 years and has had continuous R01 support from the National Cancer Institute for the past 14 years. In recognition of her outstanding investigative and mentoring track record, she is the recipient an Established Investigator Award from the National Cancer Institute (K05 CA92395 "Cancer Control in Older Adults") which supports her time to develop new research initiatives and to mentor junior investigators.

At present, Dr. Silliman is the principal investigator of two grants funded by the National Institutes of Health related to cancer care in older adults: (1) "Breast Cancer Treatment Effectiveness in Older Women" (CA093772); and (2) “Impact of Breast Cancer on Older Survivors (CA106979). She and her research team study breast cancer etiology, disparities in breast cancer therapy, and the consequences of those disparities.  

Dr. Silliman is also principal investigator of two faculty development programs (BU Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (HD43444) and the Boston Medical Center’s Center of Excellence in Geriatrics (John A. Hartford Foundation) and serves as a faculty member for the Boston University Clinical Research Training Program (K30).
