Erica D. Bernstein MD PhD is Assistant Professor of Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine. Her research background is in cytokine dysregulation in aging. She now is applying this work to evaluate the interaction between aging, inflammation, adipogenesis, and diastolic dysfunction. Current literature in this area is compartmentalized and research in one subspecialty has not consistently been integrated into another subspecialty. Dr. Bernstein bridges subspecialties through her collaboration with two established research mentors, Dr. James Kirkland from Geriatrics and Dr. Wilson Colucci from Cardiovascular Medicine.
Through a grant from the Society for Geriatric Cardiology Dr. Bernstein has initiated a new seminar series "Fundamentals in Cardiovascular Aging." Cardiovascular disease disproportionately affects the elderly and as our society ages the socioeconomic and psychological burden of cardiovascular disease grows exponentially. The Geriatrics and Cardiovascular Medicine Sections co-sponsor a monthly seminar series designed for researchers who are addressing the fundamental questions of cardiovascular aging in Boston. The seminars are an opportunity for local researchers working in cardiovascular aging to present their research and network. Additionally this is an excellent opportunity for pre- and post-doctoral fellows who are doing aging research to expand their knowledge base.
