Research

Our physicians are currently participating in various studies focusing on hepatitis C, inflammatory bowel disease, HIV infection involving the gastrointestinal tract, and cancer prevention. We are studying the molecular epidemiology of colon cancer to determine its prevalence among certain ethnic groups and to ascertain when more aggressive cancer screening might be warranted. In collaboration with Boston Medical Center specialists in diabetes, we are studying the role of intestinal hormones in signaling the pancreas to release insulin to regulate glucose and fat storage in the body, with the hopes of developing new approaches for treating obesity and diabetes. Our clinical research in the area of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis may help yield novel forms of therapy that will offer effective relief from this serious disorder.

We also are involved in basic and clinical research projects related to the protective role of mucin in the stomach, as well as the important role of gastrointestinal hormones in the development of colon cancer and other malignancies of the digestive tract.
