Trauma & Emergency Care
Trauma injury is always unexpected and can be devastating physically and psychologically to the patient and the immediate family. We have specialists experienced in all areas of trauma and emergency medicine to help manage potentially complex conditions throughout the hospital stay.
The patient experience begins in the Emergency Department where a trauma team is summoned to perform an initial assessment, conduct necessary diagnostic tests or procedures and determine a treatment plan. The trauma team leader is a trauma surgeon who is an attending general surgeon with specific expertise in trauma care. Other members of the team include emergency medicine and nursing. If necessary, immediate consults from other disciplines are available including orthopaedics, neurosurgery, facial trauma, pediatrics, an radiology among others. The multidisciplinary collaboration results in a better and more effective patient experience.
Subspecialty Collaboration and Access 24/7
Our subspecialists include general, spine, tumor, skull base, vascular, functional, epilepsy, pain, radiosurgery and pediatrics. We collaborate with other subspecialties to best meet the needs of the patient. The expertise of the physicians coupled with the technology and resources available at Boston Medical Center make this program one of the top in the Boston area.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Our team of oral and maxillofacial surgeons is a group of seven full-time and more than 20 part-time surgeons. We treat trauma patients suffering from various facial injuries, place dental implants, care for patients with oral cancer, tumors and cysts of the jaws, and perform facial cosmetic surgery. We specialize in diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the facial region including patients with problem wisdom teeth, facial pain and misaligned jaws and faces. Our advanced training in anesthesia distinguishes us by being able to provide high-quality care with maximum patient comfort and safety in an ambulatory setting.
We have subspecialty expertise in orthopaedic trauma, fractures and nonunions, hand and upper extremity injuries and spine injuries. Each subspecialty has a call schedule in order to ensure access and available services to all patients requiring orthopaedic consult and intervention. The department focuses on continuity of care, follow up and collaborative efforts in cooperation with patients' primary care and referring physicians.
Our physicians cover a wide range of areas of specialization including: head and neck trauma, allergy and sinus diseases, head and neck cancer and skull base surgery, facial plastics and reconstructive surgery, thyroid and parathyroid surgery, ear and hearing disorders, voice and swallowing disorders and balance disorders. Some of the unique services we offer include Cyberknife radiosurgery, endoscopic skull base surgery, transnasal esophagoscopy, sublingual immunotherapy, advanced cosmetic rejuvenation, free-tissue transfer reconstructive surgery and professional voice/singer rehabilitation. Within our department we also offer several ancillary services on site such as audiology and speech/language therapy.
Boston Medical Center offers a separate Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) to best serve our patients and meet their needs. Pediatric emergency medicine attendings are always on duty. A fellowship program in Pediatric Emergency Medicine has been in place for over 20 years and is one of the original programs in New England. We also have specialized, dedicated pediatric emergency nurses and social workers. The PED provides bedside ultrasound and expansive clinical expertise in moderate sedation, which allows for procedures to be performed in the ED, preventing hospitalizations and delays in definitive care. The use of computerized medical records and AutoFax system provides electronic communication with referring physicians. Also, we have a well-established and unique clinical relationship with Children's Hospital of Boston with shared faculty in Pediatric Critical Care.
Our equipment offers state-of-the-art MRI, CT, CTA, PET/CT, and three-dimensional imaging. We feature quick and easy access to imaging devices 24 hours a day. Our 33 dedicated physicians specialize in body imaging including: trauma and coronary CTA, vascular imaging and interventions, vascular neurologic interventions including stroke, aneurysms and trauma, neuroradiology and head and neck imaging, musculoskeletal imaging, pediatric imaging, breast imaging, molecular imaging and nuclear medicine including cross-sectional cardiac imaging.
Combining the expertise of cardiologists, interventional neurologists, radiologists and vascular surgeons, the Vascular Department provides comprehensive care for a wide range of conditions that can afflict the circulatory system. As leaders in the field, the department’s emphasis is on minimally-invasive treatment wherever possible, but also offers surgical care, medical management and access to clinical trials to ensure that patients get optimal, personalized care. Modern vascular suites and treatment rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and dedicated support staff committed to personalized, empathetic patient care.
