Volunteers are placed throughout the hospital in many different areas helping in many different ways, based on department need. All of our volunteers serve at least their first month in one of two roles, Volunteer Ambassador or Entertainment Cart. After that period, a wide range of roles are available to transfer into dependent on volunteer availability, skills, and schedule. Below are examples of volunteer positions currently open.

NEW positions!

OBGYN Volunteer: support and interact with the OBGYN staff by assisting with patient appointment confirmations. Can be remote!

BMC Clothing Bank Volunteer: assist Social Work staff volunteering to help inventory, stock and distribute clothing and other necessities to patients as they discharge from the hospital and face varying needs.

Family Medicine Ambassador Volunteer: assist and escort patients as they leave Family Medicine for other related appointments. Work with staff; other volunteer opportunities as well in this department; opportunities to learn and grow!

BMC Food Pantry Volunteer: a shift just opened up on THURSDAYS! Help stock and distribute healthy food items to households in need.  

Outpatient Roles

BMC Ambassador

BMC Ambassador (High Need)

A critically important role, to provide welcome, warmth and wayfinding! Greet patients and visitors as they come on campus, provide directions, escort patient and visitors to appointments throughout the medical campus.

Entertainment Cart

Entertainment Cart (High Need)

Bring reading material, crosswords, coloring, etc. to waiting rooms on a rolling cart. Share a smile and chat with patients and guests as you give away books, magazines, children's books, puzzle and game books. etc. Patients waiting for appointments with small children LOVE the entertainment cart!

 


Food Pantry

Volunteer Tax Preparer

StreetCred is seeking volunteers to assist with its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which provides free tax preparation services to families with children receiving care at Boston Medical Center's Pediatric Clinic. The program aims to empower families by helping them access the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit, and it has successfully returned over $17 million to families since its inception in 2016. No previous tax preparation experience is required to join us! Volunteers will receive training and must pass the IRS VITA Tax Exam to become certified. We ask volunteers to commit to at least one four-hour weekly shift from January to April 2025. Food Pantry (As Needed)

Assist with the inventory, picking up and stocking food, and assisting patients with shopping in the food pantry. Some produce is grown right here on the BMC Rooftop Farms!

Pediatrics Outpatient

Outpatient Pediatric Support Volunteer (As Needed)

Must be at least 16 years old and have previous experience with children.

 

Adult Inpatient

Must be at least 22 years old with strong interpersonal skills and a caring, compassionate heart.


Volunteer Visitor

Volunteer Companion (High Need)

Spend time talking or reading with a patient, engage in playing cards, board games, or simply provide company. Current and immediate openings in Geriatrics.

PACU Support Ambassador (High Need)

Assist patients arriving for day surgery, helping them find and access check in registration. Early morning shifts, 6 AM to 9 AM, Monday through Thursday, 7AM to 10 AM on Fridays. Other shifts available!



Pediatrcis Inpatient

Inpatient Pediatric Support Volunteer (As Needed)

Must be at least 20 years old and have a friendly demeanor and previous experience with children.

 


 

CALM Program

CALM Program (Wait List)

We have a fully trained group of volunteer cuddlers who assist the medical staff with newborns.
