Cyst aspirations are used to drain fluid from a cyst, which is a fluid-filled, non-cancerous sac that can occur throughout the body.

Your doctor will use an ultrasound to find your cyst, then insert a needle and drain the fluid through it.

While many cysts go away on their own, an aspiration may be needed if your cyst is painful, very big, or infected. Doctors can also use cyst aspiration to figure out if the cyst is actuall a tumor or another condition.
