Nephrostomy is an opening created between the kidney and the skin that lets urine drain from your kidney through a catheter. The catheter is attached to a plastic bag to hold your urine.

Using guided imaging, a doctor will put a needle into your kidney, then replace the needle with a catheter once it's in the right place.

This is done when one or both ureters is blocked.
