Campus Construction Update

Starting September 14, we’re closing the Menino building lobby entrance. This, along with the ongoing Yawkey building entrance closure, will help us bring you an even better campus experience that matches the exceptional care you've come to expect. Please enter the Menino and Yawkey buildings through the Moakley building, and make sure to leave extra time to get to your appointment. Thank you for your patience.

Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt is a procedure where a doctor puts a stent in your portal vein to connect it to the hepatic vein in the liver.

The portal vein carries blood from other organs to your liver. You can have high blood pressure in your portal vein, which increases your risk of internal bleeding and other serious problems. TIPS allows blood to flow from the portal vein to another vein, reducing the pressure in the portal vein.

TIPS is performed by an interventional radiologist, who uses guided imagery to connect the two veins and place a stent to keep the connection open.
