Our Mission

Boston Medical Center (BMC) is dedicated to providing high quality, comprehensive, culturally relevant health care as an academic teaching hospital. BMC pursues this mission through sponsorship of graduate medical education programs.

It is the primary goal of graduate medical education at BMC to educate and prepare physicians for board eligibility in a variety of medical disciplines through curricula which reflect an appropriate balance of patient care, education, and research. (Competencies 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)

In addition, graduate medical education at BMC emphasizes the following goals:

To provide organized and academically rigorous programs of education which foster physicians’ professional development as skilled, ethical, and compassionate clinicians, sensitive and capable of meeting the challenges of a changing healthcare environment and assuring high quality patient care(Competencies 2, 3, 4, 5, 6);

To promote research and scholarly activities relevant to the medical care of our patients and the educational needs of our trainees (Competencies 2, 3, 4, 6); and

To promote the development of a system of graduate medical education and patient care which may include collaboration with other institutions and affiliated community health centers (Competencies 1, 2, 3, 4).

As part of Boston Medical Center’s mission to provide consistently excellent and accessible health

without exception,” BMC is committed to a premier learning environment for all members of its 
community.

Boston University Medical Center/Boston Medical Center, as the Sponsoring Institution, strives to 
support the mission of Graduate Medical Education by providing continued support and sponsorship 
for all of its accredited programs.
Consistent with the Institutional and Common Program Requirements of the Accreditation Council for 
Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), BMC expects each residency and fellowship program to appoint 
the most qualified applicants, recruit and retain outstanding faculty, offer comprehensive 
educational programs, and support the professional development, well-being, and personal growth of 
each resident and fellow.

Boston Medical Center is committed to supporting an Office of Graduate Medical Education that 
partners with the Graduate Medical Education Committee to provide oversight responsibilities for 
all Graduate Medical Education programs. Furthermore, BMC will provide the educational resources 
(for example, library, teaching space and equipment, information systems, simulation center) and 
curricula common to all Graduate Medical Education programs.

To achieve these objectives, BMC has demonstrated, and will continue to demonstrate, its commitment 
to Graduate Medical Education by ensuring the provision of the necessary administrative, 
educational, financial, human, and clinical resources.


Our Graduate Medical Education mission is to:

  • Examine, explore, and challenge the inequities and disparities that affect the health of individuals.
  • Ensure that all members of the healthcare team are treated fairly and have ample opportunity to communicate any concerns, including errors and near misses, within a learning environment in which all can express concerns without fear of retaliation.
