The Orofacial Pain Program at Boston Medical Center provides diagnosis and treatment for many types of chronic head, neck, face, and jaw pain, including temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and neuropathic pain. Our Orofacial Pain Program offers patients the management of complex orofacial pain problems.

We work as a team with your referring primary care provider (PCP), dentist, or other healthcare professional to provide innovative pain relief treatments. We also provide second opinions for patients with chronic orofacial pain that has not improved with other treatments.

Treatments and Services

Orofacial pain can be difficult to diagnose and is often frustrating for patients. Our goal is to find the source of your pain and create a personalized treatment plan that fits your individual needs.

When you first visit the Orofacial Pain Program at BMC, we will perform a thorough physical examination and spend time asking about your past medical history and current symptoms. We may also run additional tests, if needed, such as a panoramic x-rays or other advanced imaging tests.

Our team provides the most up-to-date evidence-based treatments and management strategies for complex orofacial pain problems, which include:

  • Pharmacotherapy
  • Customized oral appliance therapy
  • Trigger point and Botox injections
  • Home exercises
  • Physical therapy (PT)
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy

In addition to providing treatment, we work collaboratively with many different specialists across BMC to address any other services you may need, including neurology, mental health counseling, sleep studies, physical therapy, and oral maxillofacial surgery.
