Ataxia is the lack of muscle condition in your arms and legs. It's caused by damage to a part of the brain called the cerebellum, which controls muscle coordination.

Ataxia can affect your walking, balance, speech, swallowing, eye movements, and more. It can be caused by many conditions, from genetic conditions to strokes to degenerative diseases. Alcohol misuse can also cause ataxia.

Treatment for ataxia will depend on the underlying cause. Walkers, canes, physical therapy, and speech therapy may also help.
