Functional dyspepsia is a type of upset stomach that happens often with no apparent cause. This is a common condition that is diagnosed based on symptoms.

Symptoms

Symptoms of functional dyspepsia include:

  • Pain in your stomach or upper abdomen
  • Bloating after eating
  • Burping 
  • Nausea after eating
  • Feeling full easily

Treatments

Because there's no known cause of functional dyspepsia, treatment focuses on reducing symptoms. In many people, lifestyle changes such as changing what you eat can treat this condition. Other people may need medications to relieve gas, reduce stomach acid, help your stomach empty faster, or relieve nausea.

Risk Factors

Things that can increase your risk of functional dyspepsia include:

  • Being female
  • Aspirin and ibuprofen use
  • Smoking
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • H. pylori infection
