How is mesothelioma treated?
Mesothelioma is a fast-growing cancer that is often not found until it is in its later stages. This can make it hard to treat. Possible treatments may include:
- Surgery to remove as much of the cancer as possible.
- Radiation therapy to destroy cancer cells that are left after surgery and to help ease the symptoms of the cancer.
- Chemotherapy to shrink the tumor before surgery or to help kill any remaining cancer cells after surgery.
- Immunotherapy to help stimulate the immune system to fight the cancer.
- Targeted therapy to attack the cancer cells directly.
What are the risk factors for mesothelioma?
The main risk factor for mesothelioma is being exposed to high levels of asbestos. Asbestos is a mineral used in many products, including brakes, insulation, shingles, and flooring. When the small fibers break off, they can be inhaled and travel to the lungs.
