Tics are sudden movements or sounds that people can't control. They are repetitive and usually fast, and most common in children. For many people, tics will improve or stop over time.

Tics may be caused by a tic disorder such as Tourette syndrome or conditions such as ADHD and OCD. They can run in families, meaning you may be more likely to have a tic if someone else if your family does.

Mild tics may not need treatment, but severe tics may need treatment with medications or behavioral therapy. If they are caused by an underlying condition, treating that condition can help control tics.
