A tremor is a type of uncontrollable shaking or trembling movements. Tremors are most common in the hands, but can affect any part of the body. They may come and go or be constant, and may have a big affect on your life or none at all.

Types of tremors include:

  • Essential tremor: This is the most common type of tremor. It usually affects your hands or arms while you're moving them. Experts don't know what causes an essential tremor.
  • Parkinsonian tremor: This type of tremor is common in people who have Parkinson's disease. It usually affects your hands but can affect parts of the face or your legs.
  • Dystonic tremor: The type of tremor occurs in people with dystonia, which is a type of movement disorder that causes twisting, repetitive movements.

In most cases there is no cure for tremor, but medications, physical therapy, and occupational therapy can help many people who need treatment.
