Nominations for the inaugural Research Awards are now closed. Recipients will be announced in early 2025 during a Research Town Hall. 

The Research Awards are held annually, and award categories include: Research Excellence, Early Career Research, Interdisciplinary Research, and Outstanding Research Professional. To submit a nomination, please fill out the nomination form linked below after reviewing the criteria and submission requirements for each award.

Please note that nominations can be submitted by any individuals from Boston Medical Center Health System or Boston University familiar with the nominee's achievements and contributions. Self-nominations will not be accepted. Only one nomination is allowed per person, but we encourage nominators to seek broad input from others to include in their nomination submission. Nominations require 200 words or less commenting on each of the individual award criteria, below, and should include supporting evidence such as publications, presentations, awards, and testimonials.

Research Excellence Award

This award acknowledges individuals whose dedication, innovation, and contributions have significantly advanced knowledge and made a profound impact in their respective fields. Please note: we require nominators to seek broad input from at least two faculty members to include in this nomination submission.
  • Quality of Research Output: The nominee should have produced exceptional research results, including publications, patents, software, or other scholarly works. The evaluation will consider the significance, originality, and rigor of the research.
  • Impact of Research: The nominee's research should have demonstrable impact on patient care, society, or policymaking. This may include advancements in understanding, practical applications, policy changes, or societal benefits resulting from the research.
  • Innovation and Creativity: The nominee's research should demonstrate innovation, creativity, and novel approaches to addressing research questions or solving problems within their field. This criterion considers the originality and uniqueness of the research contributions.
  • Ethical Conduct: The nominee should demonstrate adherence to ethical standards in research conduct and integrity in reporting research outcomes.
  • Long-term Impact and Sustainability: Consideration will be given to the long-term impact and sustainability of the nominee's research contributions, including potential future directions and ongoing relevance of the research findings.
  • Collaboration and Leadership: Evidence of effective collaboration within interdisciplinary teams, mentorship of students or early career researchers and/or research professionals, and leadership roles in research initiatives will be considered.

Must be a BMC researcher in good standing. Research is conducted in BMC space. 

Early Career Research Award

This award acknowledges researchers in the early stages of their careers who have exhibited exceptional talent, innovation, and dedication in their pursuit of research excellence, thus making significant contributions to their respective fields and showing promise for future impact.Please note: we require nominators to seek broad input from at least two faculty members to include in this nomination submission.
  • Research Quality and Innovation: The nominee should have demonstrated outstanding quality and innovation in their research work, exhibiting creativity, originality, and novel approaches in addressing research questions or solving problems within their field.
  • Potential for Impact: The nominee's research should show clear potential for making significant contributions to patient care, society, or policymaking in the future. This may include advancements in knowledge, practical applications, or addressing pressing societal challenges.
  • Professional Development and Growth: Evidence of the nominee's professional development and growth as a researcher will be considered, including participation in training programs, workshops, conferences, or other activities aimed at enhancing research skills and expertise.
  • Collaboration and Interdisciplinary Engagement: The nominee's ability to collaborate effectively with peers, engage in interdisciplinary research, and contribute to research teams will be evaluated. This criterion recognizes the importance of collaboration in driving innovation and addressing complex research challenges.
  • Communication and Outreach: Evidence of the nominee's ability to communicate their research findings effectively to diverse audiences, engage in outreach activities, and promote public understanding of science will be considered.
  • Ethical Conduct and Integrity: The nominee should demonstrate adherence to ethical standards in research conduct and integrity in reporting research outcomes, fostering trust and credibility in their work.

Must be a BMC researcher in good standing at the instructor or assistant professor level, or within the first year of their promotion to associate professor.  Research is conducted on BMC space.

Interdisciplinary Research Award

This award acknowledges individuals or teams whose collaborative efforts have led to innovative solutions, breakthrough discoveries, or advancements that would not have been possible within the confines of a single discipline. By fostering collaboration across diverse fields, the nominee(s) of this award have contributed significantly to expanding the frontiers of knowledge and addressing pressing global issues. Please note: we require nominators to seek broad input from at least two faculty members to include in this nomination submission.
  • Integration of Multiple Disciplines: The nominee(s) should have successfully integrated knowledge, methodologies, and perspectives from two or more distinct disciplines to tackle complex scientific challenges. The evaluation will consider the depth and breadth of interdisciplinary collaboration demonstrated in the research conducted.
  • Innovative Approach: The nominee(s) should have employed innovative approaches or methodologies that leverage insights from multiple disciplines to address the research problem or question. This criterion assesses the novelty and creativity of the interdisciplinary approach adopted.
  • Impact and Significance: The interdisciplinary research should have made a significant impact on advancing understanding, addressing societal challenges, or fostering innovation. The evaluation will consider the magnitude and breadth of the research impact across relevant fields.
  • Collaborative Teamwork: Evidence of effective collaboration and teamwork among researchers from different disciplines will be assessed. This criterion considers the ability of the nominee(s) to foster interdisciplinary dialogue, exchange ideas, and work synergistically towards common research goals.

    This criterion evaluates the extent to which the research outcomes contribute to interdisciplinary dialogue and inform policy, practice, or decision-making.

  • Communication and Dissemination: The nominee(s) should have effectively communicated the interdisciplinary research findings to diverse audiences, including specialists and non-specialists. This criterion considers the clarity, accessibility, and impact of communication efforts aimed at disseminating research outcomes.
  • Ethical Considerations: The nominee(s) should demonstrate awareness of ethical considerations inherent in interdisciplinary research, including issues related to data sharing, authorship, and cultural sensitivity. This criterion evaluates the nominee(s)' adherence to ethical standards and principles in conducting interdisciplinary research.

Must be a BMC researcher or research team in good standing.  Research is conducted in BMC space.

Outstanding Research Professional Award

This award acknowledges individuals who have consistently excelled in their professional roles, setting a standard of excellence for their peers and making significant contributions to research. Nominees of this award are recognized for their outstanding achievements, integrity, leadership, and commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism.
  • Performance Excellence: The nominee should have consistently demonstrated excellence in their professional performance, exceeding expectations and achieving exceptional results in their work.
  • Leadership and Mentorship: The nominee should have exhibited exemplary leadership skills, inspiring and guiding others to achieve their full potential. This criterion considers the nominee's ability to mentor and develop talent within the research administration domain.
  • Innovation and Creativity: The nominee should have demonstrated innovative thinking and creativity in solving problems, implementing new ideas, or driving positive change within their areas of responsibility.
  • Contributions to the Profession: The nominee's contributions to the advancement of research administration should be significant and impactful. This may include contributions to project execution, thought leadership, development of best practices, or advocacy for professional standards and ethics.
  • Professional Development and Continuous Learning: Evidence of the nominee's commitment to ongoing professional development, continuous learning, and staying abreast of emerging trends and developments in research administration will be considered.
  • Ethical Conduct and Integrity: The nominee should exemplify the highest standards of ethical conduct and integrity, earning the trust and respect of colleagues, customers, and stakeholders.

Must be a BMC employee in good standing. Minimum of 2 years of service.
