For Medical Professionals
Education & Training – Media Lab
The department has a dedicated state-of-the-art multimedia laboratory with multiple digital resources. The room measures approximately 17' by 17' and contains ten networked Dell Optiplex GX280 desktop computers, each with 1 GB of RAM, a 160-GB hard drive and a Broadcom NetXtreme ethernet card. The media center contains two professional-grade MX 2001 microphones for recording lecture materials using a dedicated computer for this purpose. The center is also equipped with an interactive whiteboard (SMART Technologies Inc., Calgary, Canada). The interactive whiteboard not only allows learners to view teaching materials collectively, but provides instructors with a means of controlling the elements of a presentation through the projection surface itself. It eliminates the need for a conventional blackboard and chalk while retaining the immediacy between the teacher and the teaching tool. The visual materials are projected onto the whiteboard using a ceiling-mounted NEC VT-770 projector.
The media center also employs a radio-frequency-controlled audience-response system (Option Technologies Interactive) to anonymously poll participants during didactic sessions. The results are displayed immediately on the whiteboard using graph charts. The center also features a wall-mounted video camera (Canon MVX45i MiniDV digital camcorder) used to record a variety of simulations, including oral board examinations. The recordings are played back on the interactive whiteboard during debriefings. The combination of computer-based presentations, interactive whiteboard, audience-response system and video-recording capabilities creates a stimulating and engaging milieu both for teachers and students. Residents and faculty have access to the multimedia laboratory 24 hours-a-day seven days-a-week using a security ID swipe card system.
