Our providers are specially trained in providing confidential, safe, and respectful care for people ending pregnancies through the second trimester. The decision is not always easy, and our staff cares about respecting each individual’s circumstances for making this choice.

The BEACON caregivers’ approach to abortion is patient-centered. Services are provided in the OBGYN clinic, in a safe space with a committed team, focused on the patient’s experience and safety. Our caregivers specialize in women with complex medical and social histories, including multiple cesarean sections, cardiac histories, polysubstance use, sickle cell disease, cancer, and many other medical problems.

Frequently asked questions about abortion

What kind of anesthesia do you offer for the procedure?

We offer a range of anesthesia, including local anesthesia, moderate sedation (like a twilight sleep), or deeper sedation, available in our individual procedure unit.

What do I need to do the day of my procedure if I want anesthesia?

Please remember to have nothing to eat or drink after midnight the day of your surgical abortion. You also need to bring an escort with you who is over 18 years old and will wait for you to be done. We will not share anything about your visit with your escort.

I’m under 18, can I have an abortion?

You can have an abortion if you are under the age of 18. Please call us to talk with our program coordinator who can help you navigate your appointment.

Can I have my counseling and my abortion on the same day?

Yes, but it depends on how far along in the pregnancy you are. Women in the second trimester, over 14 weeks, often need two separate visits. Please call us so we can talk with you about the process.

I have a complicated medical history, can I still get an abortion at Boston Medical Center?

Yes. We specialize in care for women with complex medical histories, both medically and socially. We are here to help.
