Vena cava filters help prevent blood clots from traveling to your lungs and causing pulmonary embolism. Your doctor may recommend a vena cava filter if you have blood clots but can't take blood thinners, have had deep vein thrombosis, blood thinners don't help your clots, or you're at high risk of pulmonary embolism.
Vena cava filters can be permanent or temporary.
