Subsidized Visiting Elective Program
The Subsidized Visiting Elective Program (SVEP) is committed to welcoming medical students from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. We strive to create an enriching environment that supports personal and professional growth. By participating, students are offered financial assistance up to $2500.00 while gaining valuable clinical exposure, expanding their skills, and contributing to our vibrant community dedicated to excellence in medical education and patient care
Who Qualifies
- Be a full-time third- or fourth-year MD or DO student at a Liaison Committee on Medical Education(LCME)- Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) accredited medical school.
- Have completed core clerkships in medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and obstetrics prior to the start of your rotation.
- Have completed USMLE or COMLEX Step 1 prior to the start of your rotation.
- Be a US citizen or permanent resident.
How to Apply
This process involves two separate applications: the Subsidized Visiting Elective Program (SVEP) application provides financial support, while the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) application allows students to register for a clinical elective at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine to rotate at Boston Medical Center.
Step One
We highly recommend that students create an account and log in to the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) program. This will allow them to view available rotation blocks within their program of interest. The VSLO applications are managed by the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine Registrar's Office.

Step Two
- Complete an SVEP application.
- Provide AAMC ID, clerkship names, and clerkship months from the VSLO application.
- CV/resume
- Two prepared statements of interest:*Please share your professional interests, career objectives, and long-term goals in 500 words or fewer.*Describe your reasons for applying to the BMC GME Subsidized Visiting Elective Program and outline what you hope to gainfrom this experience.
- A letter of recommendation from a faculty member who has directly observed you in a clinical setting.

Keep in mind
An acceptance into SVEP does not guarantee a clinical rotation. The Registrar’s Office at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine manages all VSLO rotation applications and will notify each applicant of their VSAS/VSLO application status.
All visiting students are required to be vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus. Proof of vaccination can be sent to BMC employee health (Working Well) by emailing working.wellclinic@bmc.org before your arrival.
AY25 Important Information
International medical students: Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine does not currently accept international medical students.
Domestic medical students: All interested applicants must apply using VSLO. The first block open to applications from visiting students begins on June 9, 2025. Students may be accepted for a maximum of 4 weeks of elective time at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine.
