New Grade for fall 2024 is a national recognition for commitment to patient safety

BOSTON – Boston Medical Center (BMC) earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit organization focused on patient safety. Grades are assigned to general hospitals across the country based on more than 30 performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries, and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.

“This accomplishment reflects exceptional performance in preventing infections, surgical complications, and medication errors while maintaining strong communication between healthcare providers,” said Jodi Larson, MD, Vice President and Chief Quality Officer at BMC. “Our team is committed to delivering the highest quality of care to our patients, so they have a safe environment to get well and thrive.”

BMC is dedicated to prioritizing patient safety and protecting patients from preventable harm and errors. Last month, BMC created its first endowed chair for Quality and Patient Safety to continue to enhance patient care and further develop cutting-edge initiatives to use data and analytics to improve health outcomes. Larson was named the first holder of the endowed chair.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections, and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent, and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.

“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade is a significant accomplishment for Boston Medical Center,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It reflects enormous dedication to your patients and their families, and your whole community should be proud. I extend my congratulations to Boston Medical Center, its leadership, clinicians, staff, and volunteers for their tireless efforts to put patients first.”
