AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is caused by HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), which is spread by shared bodily fluids, usually through unprotected sex or shared needles for drug use. AIDS weakens the body’s ability to fight infections and cancer, and someone with aids will eventually die of a related illness. Symptoms of HIV that has progressed to AIDS include persistent fever, rash, mouth sores, and fatigue.
