Alopecia areata is a type of hair loss that happens when the body’s immune system attacks hair follicles, which is where hair growth starts. This usually results in large clumps of hair falling out and creating smooth, round patches of baldness. Sometimes the hair either becomes thin in spots or falls out over the whole head and body. Hair loss generally comes and goes. Alopecia most often affects people under the age of 20, has no known causes, and is not curable but can be treated.
