Expert Cardiac Care from Infancy to Adolescence

Expert care in a family-focused environment defines the patient experience at Boston Medical Center’s Pediatric Cardiology Program. As a small program, consultations can be scheduled quickly and cardiologists can maintain close communication with referring physicians throughout the evaluation process and course of treatment. BMC’s comprehensive non-invasive cardiac care includes:

  • Fetal diagnosis
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Acquired heart disease
  • Kawasaki disease
  • Rheumatic fever
  • Arrhythmias
  • Heart murmurs
  • Syncope
  • Hypertension and hyperlipidemia

Expert care. Sharon O’Brien, MD, leads a team of board-certified, fellowship-trained cardiac specialists, who provide the full scope of non-invasive cardiac care. Our physicians also hold staff positions at Children’s Hospital Boston allowing patients direct access to the most innovative and advanced treatments for invasive procedures. BMC specialists work in tandem with a support team including pediatric cardiac nurses, pediatric echocardiography technicians, social workers and child life specialists.

Patient-focused approach. As a small program, patients requiring ongoing treatment can find comfort in building a close relationship with the cardiac care team. The hospital’s cheerful, family-centered environment is designed to provide comfort and reassurance to our pediatric patients. Child life specialists and social workers help children and families  assimilate to the hospital experience.

Innovative technology and treatment options. Our pediatric cardiac specialists hold faculty positions at Boston University School of Medicine and are constantly seeking to broaden the understanding of cardiovascular disease through research. This commitment to scientific advancement ensures our patients receive the newest, most effective diagnostics and therapies.

Multidisciplinary collaboration. Staff in the Pediatric Cardiology Department work closely with many other medical specialists including pediatric primary care, neonatology, obstetrics and gynecology and adult cardiology. Preventive cardiology management also requires physician collaboration with both hospital-based and community-based nutrition and fitness programs.
