Message from the director:

Welcome to Boston University and to Boston, one of the proudest sports towns in the country! Founded in 2005, the Boston University Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship is a 1-year ACGME-accredited program sponsored by Boston Medical Center’s Department of Family Medicine. The mission of the fellowship is to provide a well-rounded experience that will train interested physicians in the principles, practice, teaching and scholarship of primary care sports medicine. There is one position offered annually, open to graduates of accredited programs in family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine and emergency medicine.

The fellowship works to provide a broad-spectrum clinical experience with Division I, Division III and mass participation events. Sideline coverage includes Boston University varsity and club sports (Patriot League, Hockey East), Boston College football (Atlantic Coast Conference, a Power Five conference) and MIT (DIII). We promote the fellow as being “first call” early on for our athletic trainers at Boston University, which allows the fellow to understand and appreciate the role, and complexities, of being team physician. Additionally, our fellow runs weekly training rooms at BU and MIT throughout the academic year.

The primary clinical site is the Ryan Center for Sports Medicine, a comprehensive center including on-site physical therapy, athletic training, nutrition services, and orthopedic surgery. The clinic serves a highly diverse population including patients from Boston Medical Center, the largest safety net hospital in New England, and the Boston University community, with the goal of providing “exceptional care, without exception.” At the Ryan Center, fellows gain extensive experience with sports ultrasound as part of their regular clinical practice, as well as platelet-rich plasma injections and extracorporeal shockwave therapy. In addition to clinical work at the Ryan Center, rotations include sports cardiology, orthopedic specialties, pediatric sports medicine, radiology, physical therapy, sports nutrition, sports psychology, and the Killington Ski Resort clinic. Teaching opportunities abound in both clinical and classroom settings with family medicine residents, medical students, and athletic training residents.

At Boston University, we strive to provide a comprehensive and diverse experience while embracing a compassionate and holistic approach to patient care. Fellows leave the program well-prepared for any type of practice environment and positioned to become leaders and educators in sports medicine, as evidenced by the broad array of careers our former fellows have pursued. We invite you to learn more about our fellowship and encourage you to reach out with any questions.

Sincerely,

Program Director Nathan Cardoos, MD
