General Health-Related Travel Advice

We can provide travel advice and tips on areas such as:

  • Avoidance of insect bites (to prevent infection with, for example, malaria, dengue fever, or Japanese encephalitis)
  • Prevention and management of animal bites
  • Prevention and treatment of traveler’s diarrhea
  • Prevention and management of travel-related health problems, such as traffic accidents, altitude illness, motion sickness, and jet lag
  • Travel during pregnancy, with children, or for individuals with chronic diseases or immunosuppressive disorders
  • Topics for long-term travelers, including adjustment issues, healthcare options abroad, and need for tuberculosis testing

Pre-Travel Vaccination

We provide vaccination against diseases including (but not limited to):

  • Chikungunya
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Influenza
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • Meningococcus
  • Pneumococcus
  • Polio
  • Rabies
  • Tick-borne encephalitis
  • Typhoid fever (oral and injectable vaccine)
  • Yellow fever
  • Other preventable infections, such as acellular pertussis (whooping cough), diphtheria, MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella), and tetanus

Preventive Medication

  • Malaria prophylaxis medication
  • Medication for high-altitude illness (altitude sickness)
  • Medication for traveler’s diarrhea
  • Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) for HIV (for people who will be providing medical care)

Evaluation and Management of Post-Travel Illness

  • Acute and chronic diarrhea
  • Arboviral infections
  • Fever after travel
  • High-altitude illness (altitude sickness)
  • Parasitic infections, including Chagas disease, filarial diseases, malaria, schistosomiasis, and other rarer diseases
  • Skin conditions

The Travel Clinic team can provide individualized services to travelers with special medical needs, immunocompromised travelers, travelers who are pregnant, those preparing to work or live overseas for prolonged periods, and business and adventure travelers. Staff can arrange to provide sessions for groups of travelers such as students, volunteers, and missionaries.
