It occurs when there is injury to the nerves in the body, usually the ones furthest from the brain, which includes to toes, feet, and fingers. Peripheral neuropathy has a very wide variety of causes, such as diabetes, vitamin B12 deficiency, folic acid deficiency, hypothyroidism, and autoimmune disorders. It is important for patients to seek evaluation for peripheral neuropathy because if a cause is identified, it may be amenable to treatment. In addition, there are many treatment options available to reduce the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy and improve a patient’s quality of life.
