Homemade popcorn is easy to make, and can be a healthy snack when made with a small amount of oil and salt. For other healthy topping ideas, see below.

 

Ingredients


Oil - 2 Tablespoons canola, avocado or other high heat oil Popcorn_Kernels - ¼ cup Salt - ½ teaspoon kosher or sea salt, ¼ teaspoon table salt

Instructions

Step 1
Place oil and 3 popcorn kernels in a pot with the lid on over medium-high heat. Wait for the kernels to pop.
Step 2
Once the kernels pop, remove the pot from the heat. Remover the 3 pieces of popcorn with a spoon and eat or discard.
Step 3
Add the remaining popcron kernels to the pot. Cover the pot, and carefully shake it to distribute the kernels.
Step 4
Return the covered pot to the heat on medium-high. Keep the pot on the heat until the popping slows down or stops.
Step 5
Turn off stove, remove pot from heat, and uncover immediately to allow the steam to escape. Season with salt or other toppings.*

Notes

Parmesan Garlic Seasoning:

  • Parmesan Cheese - 4 Tablespoons
  • Garlic Powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Dried Italian Herbs  - 2 teaspoons (optional)

BBQ Popcorn

  • Smoked Paprika - 3 Tablespoons
  • Chipotle Chili Powder - ½ teaspoon
  • Brown Sugar - 1 ½ Tablespoons
  • Garlic Powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Onion Powder - 1 teaspoon

Cheesy Without the Cheese

  • Nutritional Yeast - 4 Tablespoons

Nutritional yeast is a heat treated yeast product that is available in most grocery stores. It tastes salty and cheesy but has no dairy and is low in sodium. It is rich in B vitamins.
