BMC’s Center for Infectious Diseases offers comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services for adults in all areas of infectious diseases, with particular expertise in antibiotic management, HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and travel and tropical medicine. We also work closely with colleagues across the hospital to address infectious-related issues related to substance use disorders and maternal-fetal medicine.

BMC has one of the largest programs in HIV/AIDS care in New England, where we provide multidisciplinary primary and consultative care for patients with these conditions.

Management of Complex Antimicrobial Treatments

Our team provides multidisciplinary care for patients on complex treatment regimens of intravenous antibiotics and/or high-risk oral antibiotics.

An STD clinic offering clinic testing, diagnosis, and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases in a confidential setting.

A program providing clinical care from HIV specialists, including testing, treatment, and ongoing management for people living with HIV/AIDS.

A program providing behavioral health services in other departments and supporting patients with mental health needs through coordinated care, screening, and treatment.

A program providing travel health services, including vaccinations, preventive counseling, and care for travel-related illnesses.

A clinic providing care for tuberculosis, including evaluation of tuberculosis symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.

Education and Training

Infectious Diseases Fellowship

BMC offers a two-year infectious diseases fellowship with an optional third year of research as part of the hospital epidemiology and antimicrobial stewardship track. Our program aims to produce well-rounded infectious disease practitioners with experience in microbiologic techniques, inpatient and outpatient care, and research.

Infectious Diseases and Addiction Medicine Fellowship

Our Infectious Diseases Department has partnered with the Grayken Center for Addiction to offer a three-year fellowship in infectious disease and addiction medicine. This unique program offers one year focused on clinical infectious diseases, one year focused on addiction medicine, and a third year focused on training that combines both disciplines.

BMC’s infectious diseases faculty are leaders in research related to global health, hospital epidemiology and stewardship, HIV, public health, tuberculosis, Chagas disease, and more. This includes research at BMC’s Infectious Disease Clinical Research Unit (ID-CRU), which manages ongoing research studies related to the care and treatment of people with HIV.

BMC researchers are finding innovative new ways to treat and cure infectious diseases. While we enroll any and all eligible patients in clinical trials, BMC physicians are leaders in the enrollment of under-represented minorities in clinical trials.
