Robert Saper MPH, MD, serves as Program Director with Paula Gardiner, MD, MPH, serving as Assistant Director. Other clinical faculty include: Katherine Gergen-Barnett, MD, Yen Loh, MD, Ellen Highfield, LAc, Lisa Spellman, LAc, and Lynne Mullen, LMT. Outpatient Integrative Medicine consultations with Drs. Gergen-Barnett, Gardiner and Saper are available at the Department’s Family Medicine Clinic located in the Yawkey Ambulatory Care Center. In addition, Dr. Loh provides consultations and acupuncture at the Dorchester House Multiservice Center and Dr. Gardiner provides consultations to oncology patients at the Cancer Center in the Moakley Building. The Initiative for Integrative Medicine and Health Disparities also offers oncology massage and acupuncture internships. Through these highly successful training programs, oncology patients receive free weekly acupuncture and massage treatments from interns closely supervised by experienced Integrative Medicine staff. Through collaboration with the New England School of Acupuncture, free acupuncture treatments are also available to children and adults for a wide variety of medical conditions. BMC patients and staff can also participate in weekly yoga and tai chi classes. In addition to clinical programs, faculty conduct a wide variety of research and educational programs related to integrative medicine. Integrative medicine combines the best of conventional medicine with safe effective evidence-based complementary therapies such as acupuncture, massage and yoga. The Initiative for Integrative Medicine and Health Disparities within the Department of Family Medicine was created in 2004. The mission of the Program is to substantially impact the quality of life for the urban underserved through providing access to integrative medicine clinical services, research and education.
