Campus Construction Update

Starting September 14, we’re closing the Menino building lobby entrance. This, along with the ongoing Yawkey building entrance closure, will help us bring you an even better campus experience that matches the exceptional care you've come to expect. Please enter the Menino and Yawkey buildings through the Moakley building, and make sure to leave extra time to get to your appointment. Thank you for your patience.

Volunteer Opportunities | Boston Medical Center

The Volunteer Services Department at BMC is dedicated to helping BMC fulfill its mission of providing consistently excellent and accessible health services to all in need of care, regardless of status or ability to pay. Our volunteers are an invaluable asset to the medical center and support staff, patients, families and visitors.

Volunteers assist the BMC community with services that support the hospital's mission. Opportunities include working in pediatrics, visiting with patients in geriatrics, welcoming people to the campus and helping them find their way, rolling an entertainment cart filled with books, games and puzzles for people waiting for appointments, helping with administrative duties - and so much more!

All NEW BMC volunteers a required to serve for one month in the BMC Ambassador role or the Entertainment Cart role as an introductory to the volunteer experience.

  • These roles provide orientation to the BMC campus, clients/patients/family/staff.
  • This initial role helps volunteers learn about the patient experience (nervousness, confusion, anxiety, language barriers, emotional distress) as well as learning about calming, listening, assisting, providing information and walking with patients as they access the medical center.
  • After a month serving in one of these two roles, volunteers may ask to be assigned to specific opportunities in specialized volunteer roles on specific floors and units. Volunteer Services will assist.

Volunteer Services helps departments identify volunteer needs, develop position descriptions, identify and recruit potential volunteers, shepherd applicants through the BMC onboarding process, provide orientation and support new volunteers as they report to their departments and assignments. It is challenging, exciting, rewarding and FUN!

Volunteering at BMC helps people, cares for people, extends compassion to people. Come join the team!
