Boston Medical Center (BMC) is proud to offer five PGY-1 preliminary positions in surgery. The preliminary year is typically filled by an advance match candidate who has already matched in a specialty, such as interventional radiology or anesthesiology, or is filled by someone who is interested in general surgery or one of the surgical subspecialties but has not yet matched.

We offer exposure to many areas of surgery, including trauma/acute care surgery, vascular, thoracic, colorectal, and MIS. The year is predominantly at BMC, but a few months are spent at the VA hospital in nearby West Roxbury, where you will work with residents from Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Anyone who is reentering the match will be counseled by Residency Program Director Donald Hess, MD, as well as our associate program directors. We take the education of our preliminary interns very seriously, and there will be little difference in rotation schedule and no difference in call responsibilities. All preliminary residents are expected to participate in didactic conferences and in the OR when assigned cases. As Boston’s safety-net hospital and busiest trauma center, Boston Medical Center provides unique opportunities that are not offered everywhere.

The postgraduate positions for our most recent preliminary residents are shown below.

Applicants who are interested in a preliminary position in our program should send inquiries to Lana Ketlere.
