Campus Construction Update

The Department of Family Medicine offers an academic fellowship program designed for those residents whose career goals include Productive research careers and/or medical education. The fellowship is a combined program with the Section of General Internal Medicine and Department of Pediatrics at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center.

Location

The Academic Family Medicine Research Fellowship takes place at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, Boston Medical Center and Boston University School of Public Health. Boston Medical Center is proudly the largest safety net in New England for quality healthcare for our most vulnerable citizens.

Dates and Orientation

Every year, the fellowship begins on July 1. A full orientation schedule is organized for each fellow to familiarize the fellow with various activities within the fellowship, department, and to identify potential faculty mentors.

Stipend and Benefits

  • Boston University faculty appointment and benefits package
  • Stipend: Entering fellows receive the PGY4 level salary
  • Tuition for the Boston University School of Public Health, MSc or MEd
    Note: Conference and travel funds for scientific conferences such as STFM (Society for Teachers in Family Medicine), NAPCRG (North America Primary Care Research Group), and NRSA (National Research Service Award Fellows conference)

Faculty Mentoring

After several weeks of meeting with faculty to discuss their research interests, the fellow chooses a primary Mentor from the Department of Family Medicine who will provide overall program and career guidance. The fellow will also choose one or more Research Advisors, specific to each study in which the fellow will participate, to assist him or her to develop the research question, design the study, conduct pilot work, conduct the study, analyze the collected data, write a paper for refereed publication, and write grants to support continued work and faculty development.

Setting

  • Research training in the School of Public Health, leading to an M.Sc., in Epidemiology or Health Services
  • Active involvement within a community of primary care fellows, clinician-scientists and investigators within the department, other primary care departments at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, and the School of Public Health
  • Mentoring, including active promotion of involvement in the national family medicine and primary care academic communities
  • Participation in the conduct of research within a network of local community health centers, the department’s own practice, and state, regional and international research networks
  • Involvement in the funded research of senior faculty toward the development of skills in interdisciplinary research collaboration and grants management

Fellowship Activities

  • Weekly department research seminar where fellows and senior faculty present ongoing research
  • Weekly academic seminar designed to promote research, presentations and publication of scholarly activities
  • Assignment of each fellow to an academic career mentor and research advisors for individual projects
  • Family Medicine grand rounds
  • Family Medicine clinical activity
  • Medical student and/or resident teaching
  • Protected time for individual scholarly activity allowing for the preparation of research abstracts, presentations, grants and publications
