Program Description

The purpose of the Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) + MS program in collaboration with the University Of North Carolina Eshelman School Of Pharmacy is to cultivate the next generation of pharmacy leaders with a focus on increasing diversity specifically for underrepresented minorities (URM) in pharmacy leadership roles. The program prepares residents for advanced managerial and leadership roles within pharmacy and healthcare systems. Residents will undertake longitudinal coursework towards a MS degree with a concentration on Pharmaceutical Leadership, delivered through online classes at UNC. Learning from some of the best programs in the region, the resident will develop relevant clinical pharmacy competencies and work on pharmacy and health-system corporate/business strategy initiatives. Graduates of this HSPAL program will be equipped to take on high-level management and supervisory roles in various healthcare settings, with a solid foundation in both clinical and operational leadership. This dual focus ensures that residents are well-prepared to drive innovations in pharmacy practice and contribute to the advancement of the profession.

Purpose

A PGY2 health-system pharmacy administration and leadership residency builds upon PGY1 residency graduates' competence in the delivery of patient-centered care and in pharmacy operational services to prepare residents who can assume high level managerial, supervisory, and leadership responsibilities. Areas of competence emphasized during the program include: safe and effective medication-use systems, quality assurance and improvement, the management of human resources, the management of financial resources, use of technology, and advanced leadership. The residency lays the foundation for continued growth in management and leadership skills. Upon graduation, residents are prepared for a clinical or operational management/supervisory role in a variety of work settings.

Program Outcomes

  1. Clinical and Operational Management: Overseeing daily pharmacy operations, including workflow optimization, inventory control, and regulatory compliance.
  2. Medication Use Systems: Ensuring safe and effective medication practices.
  3. Quality Assurance and Improvement: Enhancing the quality of care and operational efficiency.
  4. Human Resources Management: Overseeing staff and fostering a positive and productive work environment.
