BOSTON – Anthony Hollenberg, MD, currently Physician-in-Chief at Boston Medical Center (BMC), has been appointed as the next President of the hospital by the BMC Board of Trustees to continue to advance the academic medical center’s leading role in clinical innovation, research, and health equity. This appointment fills a key position on the newly reimagined leadership team at Boston Medical Center Health System (BMCHS). Hollenberg, along with the Presidents of WellSense Health Plan and Clearway Health, will report to Alastair Bell, MD, MBA, President & CEO of BMCHS.
Hollenberg is a nationally recognized physician-scientist who specializes in endocrinology. He was named Physician-in-Chief of BMC and the John Wade Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine in 2022. Before joining BMC and Boston University, Hollenberg served as Chair of the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Department of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and Physician-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Hollenberg currently oversees the Department of Medicine, BMC’s largest clinical department, encompassing a wide range of patient care and research.

Hollenberg’s clinical work and research has focused on thyroid disorders, investigating the physiological and molecular mechanisms by which thyroid hormones regulate metabolism, including body weight. Additionally, his laboratory explores the underpinnings of thyroid gland development. He has published more than 100 original studies in journals and contributed 30 book chapters and reviews.
Hollenberg received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and his medical degree from the University of Calgary. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, followed by a clinical and research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.
BMC and Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine will launch a search to fill Hollenberg’s role as Physician-in-Chief and Chair of the Department of Medicine.
