Boston Medical Center Health System (BMCHS) Inclusive Management Administrative Fellowship is a highly selective, one-year post-graduate training program that will broaden the candidate's healthcare administration knowledge and enhance their hands-on skills with the aim that they can build a successful career as a healthcare administrator.

The fellowship is semi-structured and preceptor-driven. Each fellow will have an opportunity to rotate through clinical and functional areas of the hospital, shadowing staff members to gain a direct view into their day-to-day operations. Areas include, but are not limited to, operations, human resources, finance, and quality. Senior leaders at Boston Medical Center will provide formal mentorship.

Who can apply?

This fellowship is open to candidates who are within one year of their post-graduate education. We are committed to advancing diversity in healthcare leadership, so candidates who are underrepresented in medicine are encouraged to apply.

Application materials

  • Each applicant must submit:
    • Résumé
    • Personal statement that includes (1) your motivations for working in healthcare administration, (2) why you are interested in the BMCHS Administrative Fellowship, and (3) your fellowship and career objectives. (500 words max)
    • Short-answer responses to the following questions:
      • What does health equity mean to you, and why is improving health equity important to you personally? Think about ways you may have experienced or witnessed this in your own life.  (250 words max)
      • Choose one health equity intervention that is currently being implemented (by a hospital, government entity, or other institution or individual). Why does this intervention resonate with you? How could you improve or build upon this intervention? (250 works max)
    • 3 letters of recommendation
    • Official graduate school transcripts

Who is eligible to apply?

Candidates must have graduated from a master’s program or completed their degree within one year before the starting the fellowship.  Accepted degree programs include: MBA, MHA, MSBA, MPH, MPA, MS. If you are interested in other career opportunities at BMCHS, please visit jobs.bmc.org to view our current openings. 

Are fellows offered permanent roles at BMC after completion of the program?  

Permanent employment is not guaranteed, but we strongly encourage fellows to apply to full-time positions at BMC after completing the fellowship. The aim of the program is to train and develop individuals to be prepared to undertake leadership roles within BMC. Fellows are encouraged to discuss their career path with their mentor and apply for open positions in the final months.

What is the salary and benefits of admin fellows? 

We offer a competitive salary and full benefits package.  Additionally, we support professional development opportunities during the fellowship year.  This can include attending conferences, continuing education, certification opportunities, etc.

Does BMC Admin Fellowship support foreign applicants?

Yes. 

Foreign applicants who meet the educational eligibility requirements are welcome to apply to the BMC Admin Fellowship under Optional Practical Training (OPT) status. We do not provide work visas for administrative fellows.

When and where will interviews occur?

We will begin conducting interviews in October 2024. Initial rounds will be done via Zoom and final round interviews will be on-site at Boston Medical Center. 

What are examples of the projects that fellows work on? 

Fellows work on wide range of projects across hospital and health system. A few examples of potential projects include:

  • identifying hospital growth opportunities (eg radiology, infusion, SNFs) 
  • responding to a state RFP to provide respite services 
  • designing a program to improve behavioral health quality measures ACOs,
  • implementing a new care management program focused on reducing unnecessary medical expense  
  • project management and implementation of new systems 
  • process improvement of operational workflows
  • interim management of units etc. 

What professional support and mentorship will be available for fellows?

Each fellow will be paired with a senior leader (VP or higher) who will serve as their mentor throughout the program. Fellows will meet with their mentors to discuss their overall career goals and learning objectives for the fellowship. Additionally, the mentor will meet regularly with fellows to discuss project progress, provide coaching and feedback, and answer questions about BMC and healthcare administration more broadly.

How many fellows accepted each year?

For the 2025 program year, there are two open positions. 

Does BMC Admin Fellowship accept students from 3-year master’s programs? 

Yes. Interested candidates must have completed their program matriculation / didactic learnings in order to be considered.
