La cirugía oral y maxilofacial en Boston Medical Center consta de dos divisiones distintas: cirugía oral y maxilofacial, y patología oral y maxilofacial.
La cirugía oral y maxilofacial es la especialidad de la odontología, que incluye el diagnóstico, el tratamiento quirúrgico y complementario (tratamiento accesorio utilizado en combinación para mejorar el tratamiento primario) de enfermedades, lesiones y defectos que involucran tanto los aspectos funcionales como visuales de los tejidos duros y blandos de la región oral y maxilofacial.
La patología oral y maxilofacial es la especialidad de la odontología y patología que se ocupa de la naturaleza, identificación y manejo de las enfermedades que afectan las regiones oral y maxilofacial. Es una ciencia que investiga las causas, procesos y efectos de estas enfermedades. La práctica de la patología oral incluye la investigación, el diagnóstico de enfermedades mediante exámenes clínicos, radiográficos, microscópicos, bioquímicos u otros, y el manejo de los pacientes.
Además de estar involucrado en el diagnóstico y tratamiento de deformidades faciales congénitas y adquiridas, trastornos de la ATM, apnea del sueño y ronquidos, cirugía reconstructiva facial, trauma maxilofacial, y enfermedades patológicas de la cavidad oral y regiones faciales, el Departamento de Cirugía Oral y Maxilofacial también ofrece micro-neurocirugía, cirugía estética y oncológica con capacidad de reconstrucción microvascular.

Integrated OMFS Training Programs
The four-year certificate and six-year MD-integrated training OMFS programs have 13 full- and over 25 part-time OMS attending staff who participate in the didactic and clinical education of our residents. Additionally, two prosthodontists, two oral pathologists, and an orofacial pain specialist work with our surgical residents, adding a unique in-house, interdisciplinary flavor to their comprehensive training experience. As the only “expanded-scope” OMS training program in New England, our trainees gain experience in the entire spectrum of contemporary surgical care, including micro-neurosurgery, oncological surgery, microvascular reconstruction, and facial cosmetic surgery.
