Un colesteatoma es un crecimiento de la piel que ocurre en el oído medio detrás del tímpano. Esta afección generalmente es el resultado de una función deficiente de la trompa de Eustaquio junto con una infección del oído medio (otitis media), pero también puede estar presente al nacer. La afección es tratable, pero solo se puede diagnosticar mediante un examen médico. Con el tiempo, el colesteatoma no tratado puede provocar erosión ósea y propagación de la infección del oído a áreas localizadas como el oído interno y el cerebro. Si no se trata, puede ocurrir sordera, absceso cerebral, meningitis y muerte.
