The BMC GME URiM Cohort Mentorship Program is designed to create a supportive community for interns who identify as underrepresented minorities in medicine (URiM). Our mentors are available to help each mentee become familiar with their new environment and support their transition from medical student to resident. We aim to achieve these goals by organizing social and educational events that foster cross-program relationships and promote physical and mental wellness.

It's important for mentees to remember that mentors are available to offer guidance and support. They have gone through similar experiences and can offer advice on a range of topics, including transitioning to residency, living in Boston, and dealing with challenges that may arise as a URiM, such as micro/macro aggressions, imposter syndrome, and discrimination. Your mentor can assist you in learning and accessing resources to effectively address and process challenges.

As a mentee, you will have the opportunity to participate in social and educational events that focus on good mental health and wellness among residents. These events will help you build a supportive community and develop effective coping mechanisms. Recognizing your mentors and peers as valuable resources for support and guidance is important. We hope you see them as a support system and a resource from whom you can learn how to make your transition as smooth as possible or manage any issues that may arise.

  •  Welcome to BMC URiM Intern Social. This event is designed to introduce URiM interns from different programs to each other, with a focus on building cross-program relationships.
  • Our Virtual Lunch and Learn sessions are educational events that provide helpful information and tips for being successful with real life issues.
  • The URiM Martha’s Vineyard Retreat is hosted on the picturesque island of Martha’s Vineyard. This event focuses on mental health and wellness for URiM trainees, while also offering opportunities to build cross-program relationships.
  • Our Celebrating Our History events celebrate the unique differences of underrepresented race and ethnic groups.
